Stop Motion Animation

This is my first attempt at stop motion animation. I put the images into iPhoto then used Garage Band to create the final product. The people in the photos are my sister and her boyfriend.

A step by step of what I did during project 4

27/05/10
I started of the process of creating my video clip by doing research on my chosen area witch was the graveyards, I then drew a story board and wrote out my script. We went to the castle and filmed, we captured the video, edited it and outputted it.

Video Artists

27/05/10
Video art came into existence during the 1960s and 1970s, is still widely practiced and has given rise to the widespread use of
video installations. Video art is a type of art which relies on moving pictures and comprises video and/or audio data.

David Hall
(born 1937) is a British video artist, whose pioneering work did much to establish video as an art form. During the 1960s he worked as a sculptor and showed his work internationally. He won first prize at the Biennale de Paris in 1965 and took part in other key shows including Primary Structures, New York in 1966 which marked the beginning of Minimalist art. Soon he began working with film and at the beginning of the 1970s turned to video as an art medium.

Lisa Steele (b. 1947 in Kansas City, Missouri) is a Canadian artist, a pioneer in video art, educator, curator and co-founder of V tape in Toronto. Born in the United States, Steele moved to Canada in 1968 and is now a Canadian citizen. She has collaborated exclusively with her partner Kim Tomczak since the early 1980s. An important pioneer of video art in Canada since the early 1970s, Steele has shown internationally at the Venice Biennale (1980), the Kunsthalle (Basel), the Museum of Modern Art (NYC), the National Gallery of Canada, the Institute of Contemporary Art (Boston), 49th Parallel Videoseries, the Vancouver Art Gallery and the Long Beach Museum.

Danny Matthys (Zottegem 1947) is a Flemish - Belgian visual artist, which was originally known as conceptual artist of international reputation. In the beginning of his career in the sixties of the 20th century, he was a pioneer in Polaroid art and Video art.

Digital Videos

27/05/10
There are different methods of storing and displaying digital videos.

Storing digital videos Displaying digital videos
1) on the original tape 1) through the TV
2) on computer hard drive 2) on the computer monitor
3) on a memory stick 3) on an over head projector

Documentary Makers

27/05/10
I have looked at different documentary makers to get a better idea about how to put together my segment of our project.

I found an Australian wildlife documentary maker named Malcolm Douglas who goes around Australia filming his adventures with the help of his mate and dog that accompany him. He is sometimes referred to as the barefoot bushman.

My lecturer suggested I should also look at Michel Moore and Anthony Q Artis.
I found some information about Michel Moore on Wikipedia which i found interesting to read.

Stirling Castle Documentary

16/03/10 - 25/05/10
I have been very busy doing research for my part of the documentary. The group I have been placed in consits of Jennifer and Alexandra along with myself.

From the 2nd through 19th of April the entire college is on Easter Break after we returned we started planning for the trip up to the castle. During this trip we must get enough usable footage for our parts of the documentary, then in the fallowing weeks we will edit it all together to make a cohesive DVD.

On the 29th of April we went up to the castle to do our filming. Our class divided into groups and proceeded to film footage relevant to our own topics. I did the majority of filming for my group. We did not get to use a tripod as there was a shortage of them, so some of the footage might be a bit shaky.

May the 2nd and 3rd were college in-service days. Thursday the 6th we tried to up load the footage but the computers wouldn't cooperate with us so we had to leave it for the fallowing week after the maintenance man has had a look at them and fixed the problem.

Editing is going well however when Alex and I tried to do our over dubbing the mics didn't really want to work. We should finish our part of the documentary by the end of next week.

Big John's Class

11/03/10
Stirling Castle documentary
Today we are in the process of idea gathering for our next project which is to make a documentary about Stirling Castle. Each member of the class has been given a part of the castle to research and then talk about during the documentary. I have chosen to do the graveyards that are up at the castle.

Research on the Stirling Castle graveyard. I spent hours on the internet looking at different websites on the castle itself trying to find information the is usable and relevant to my part of the documentary.

Brian's Class

23/02/10
Today I typed up what I had already rewritten and worked on rewriting more which I will then upload onto Moodle latter on.

Angie's Class

22/02/10
Today I painted my hair red and then I added brown to the red to create a slightly darker red to use to highlight the shades within the image. While that was drying I worked on tracing images to over lay onto the image.

Brian's Class

16/02/10
Today I learned how to use Scribus; Brian did a class demonstration on the projector and I watched on the computer screen. Then I worked through the printouts and created a page on Andy Warhol using the down loads.

John and Rob's Classes

11/02/10
Today the entire class went through to the Falkirk campus and were shown around. Then we went to the BBC in Glasgow to watch how a program was filmed.

Angie's Class

08/02/10
Today I traced my
acetate drawing onto an A3 size paper. Angie helped me to realign the image when I had to move the image up to copy the lower part. After I had completed copying my picture, I started to look at ideas for the background and color ideas.

Brian's Class

09/02/10
Today I started to gather information for my article about living with a nut allergy. I went onto Moodle and downloaded the Article Planner, to help gather all the material into one place. After gathering information off the Internet I uploaded the file onto the Moodle link. I also looked for images to include in my article.

Brian's Class

02/02/10
Today I took part in a class meeting and discussed different ideas for our third project. We are making a magazine for the college promoting our course, Access to Creative Industries. I am going to write an article about living with a nut allergy and the difficulties of knowing what is safe to eat due to over labeling with "May Contain Nuts" or in some cases, like school diners, no labeling at all; some times the dinner ladies don't even know what is in the food themselves. I gathered some info off the net and will gather some images as well.

Angie's Class

01/02/10
Today we began working on our self portraits. I had my picture taken again as I was not happy with the one taken last week. Then I started to trace the out line and the important highlights onto acetate. Then I put the acetate onto the projector to trace the enlarged image onto an A3 size piece of paper; however, the image I had traced onto the acetate was too large and I will have to retrace a smaller image onto acetate next week.

Angie's Class

25/01/10
Today I learned about Andy Warhol and looked at some of his work on the internet. I chose five of his works to print out, these I then glued into my sketch book and wrote some comments at the side of each. Then the class had pictures taken to use in the creation of a self portrait.

Report on Animation

Animation has a long and varied history, from cave paintings showing running herds of prey and fearsome predators to depictions of wrestling and festival parades in Ancient Egypt, to the friezes on the side of the Parthenon in Ancient Greece. Still life animation and the artistic portrayal of people and the time in which they lived is evident all around the globe and the need to represent what we see is something that makes the human race what we are. This need to pass on knowledge and point of view through art is one of the many things that helps archaeologists understand what our ancestors saw and felt when they were working on their masterpieces.
With the invention of the magic lantern in 1671 we see a massive leap in the creativity of artists and the first attempts at moving animation. Though some of the shows that would have been all the rage in London during this time may seem silly and unimpressive by today's standards, they were the first steps toward the creation of cartoons and live moving pictures that we have now.
In modern times we have kept the basic techniques and ideas of our forefathers and built upon them. Adding new technology into the mix has brought about the newest computer programs. Instead of just drawn images we now have live action movies as well, this has allowed artists and scriptwriters the ability to see their creations come to life on screen. Yet with all this new lease of creativity we still love to see remakes of the "Classic Stories" and directors love to work on projects surrounding their favourite childhood stories.

Finished Project two

Today my group finished off our second project. The video we made deals with the anti-racism project Show Racism the Red Card.

Rotoscoping

Rotoscoping is a technique used by animators to create an animated movie from live-action film. Although the process of tracing over the live action frame by frame used to have to be done all by hand, in recent years the process has been sped up with the use of new computer programs. A recent movie using this technique is Beowulf. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v9qpqyO_dmU

Cut Out Animation

Cutout animation is not widely used in main stream animation any more. South Park, however has managed to retain its original appearance while incorporating some of the more modern technologies. Here the very first intro to South Park along with one of the more reacent ones. The only real change is the quality of the picture. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWmjK2f6XY8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZaCs5Wh_o_U

Drawn Animation

Drawn animation is one of the oldest methods of creating a movie. With the creation of the first film camera people started to illustrate their stories. In recent times drawn animation has taken a back seat to other more modern methods, however it is still used widely within the making of films for children. One of the most well known examples is 101 Dalmatians, made by Walt Disney. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lheD6-IXXYA

Computer-Generated Imagery

Computer-Generated Imagery, more commonly known as CGI; is used in television shows, commercials, and films during the special effects. Some movies are made completely from CGI, such as TMNT (2007). Here is a link to one of the trailers for the movie. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YApWhRvqdZQ

Stop Motion

Stop Motion animation, also known as frame-by-frame, developed alongside the invention of the camera. Initially the cameras took to long to take one photo, but as the technology of film developed this type of animation became more feasible. In recent decades the popularity of this type of animation grew. Although the process is still a relatively long one the films when completed have a richness that live film has trouble capturing. Here is an example off youtube although the quality isn't the best. http://http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpVlcpk6x5I

Flipbook

Flipbooks are a series of pages of paper or card with images drawn onto them. The images moved slightly from page to page and as the pages are flipped through the images move. Here is an example of a flipbook from youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UocF4ycBnYE

Praxinoscope

Paxinoscope replaced the zoetrope in 1877. Taking animation to the next stage of it development. Like the zoetrope it was made of a cylinder with images around the inside. However unlike the zoetrope it has a set of mirrors in the center which the viewers looked at and saw the pictures move. This youtube clip has two different examples. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOItdZOGnx8

Zoetrope

The zoetrope was popular from its creation in 1834 until it was made obsolete in 1877. The zoetrope was made up of a cylinder with vertical slits cut in the sides. A strip of of card with drawings or a strip of film are laid underneath the slits. This is then mounted on a base with a spindle. The fast turning of the cylinder allows the allusion of movement to occur. Here is an example from youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dKEM5sYnOjE
